2006 Vintage
Region: Barossa Valley Grapes: 56% Shiraz, 44% Grenahce
Veritas Winery was established in 1955 by Rolf Heinrich Binder. In 2005, on their 50th Anniversary, Veritas became Rolf Binder Wines. The winery tradition is now continued by Rolf and Christa, as brother and sister winemakers, jointly awarded Barossa Winemakers of the year 2005. The philosophy of all Rolf Binder Wines is to let the vineyard tell its own story. The Christa Rolf Shiraz Grenache is no exception. Comprising 100% Barossa fruit, the Grenache comes from the Rolf Binder prize Western Ridge Vineyard on the edge of the Marananga bowl, the growers Hearnden, and Kalleske. The Shiraz is from the Stephanie Vineyard, combined with grower Crowhurst from Greenock. The blend proportion 56% Shiraz and 44% Grenache.
Vinification The Christa Rolf is hand and machine harvested. The wine comprises seven batches of grapes that are separately crushed, fermented and aged until bottling. The crush is fermented in 8 tonne open fermenters.
The fermentation was completed in tank, the wines were then racked to barrel. Oak used for the Shiraz was 15% new oak, 45% shaven American and 40% two year old American Oak. For the Grenache, 50% shaven French, 30% shaven American and 20% two year old French. The wine was blended to style, utilising the strength of the Shiraz and the Veritas Grenache lots.
Reviews “A sexy knock-out effort for drinking over the next 5-7 years is the 2006 Shiraz/Grenache Halliwell (US name). This aromatic blend of 60% Shiraz and 40% Grenache offers up notes of blueberries, raspberries, cherries, earth, spice, and a hint of oak. It is full-bodied with juicy, concentrated flavours, supple tannins, and a velvety, opulent finish.” 92 points Robert Parker The Wine Advocate
“Lovely, intense fruit, with musk and plum aromas… It’s ripe and concentrated, with light tannins. Finishes with an alcohol kick, but classic...the rich sweet flavours, suppleness and soft tannins made it simply delicious. Enjoy it now and over the next three years or so. It’s very good value. 94 points” Gourmet Traveller WINE Aug - Sep 2006
