2004 Vintage

D. O. Calificada Rioja
Varieties: Tempranillo peludo (100 %)

Tasting Notes: The 2004 San Vicente is sourced from a single vineyard and aged for 20 months in new French and American oak. Deep crimson-colored, it offers an enticing bouquet of pencil lead, black cherry, and black raspberry. This leads to an elegant Rioja with excellent balance, intense flavors, and 5-7 years of aging potential. It should be at its best between 2011 and 2025.

Origin of the Grapes:
Vineyard: Finca la Canoca, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, La Rioja; 18 Has (44.5 acres). Soils of calcareous clay. High density plantation on trellis. Organic fertilization. Exhaustive manual harvesting of perfectly mature clusters with good sanitary conditions; further selection made in the winery using a sorting table.
Date of harvest: 14 and 15 October 2004. Yield: 28 Hls./ Ha.
Fermentaion: 10 days with two pump-overs daily. Traditional elaboration, 100% de-stemmed. Temperature control between 28 and 30º C (82 and 86º F).
Maceration: On the skins for 22 days. The first ten days, two daily pump-overs; after that, the frequency was reduced, finishing with a light pump-over every two days.
Malolactic Fermentation: In barrel

Aging:
Barrel: 20 months in new Bordelaise barrels of French oak (80%) and American oak (20%) beginning in December 2004. Racking every four months. Bottled unfiltered in June
2006.

Vintage: The end of the vegetative cycle was characterized by mild temperatures and less rain than other vintages. First days in winter had mild temperatures followed by a strong drop in temperatures and some snow. Similar weather until the beginning of spring dprovided a very late bud breaking (beginning of May). Spring had mild (or cool) temperatures without frosts, this favored an adequate bunch development and an almost perfect fecundation. Summer started with an intense vegetative delay. Temperatures stayed slightly colder than usual but with a big thermal jump in day and night temperatures,  this increased grape ripeness and development. After September the 10th the weather improved (sunny and thermal day/night jumping) favoring the production of aromatic compounds, antocianos and polifenoles.
