D.O.C. Rioja Grape Variety: 90% Viura, 10% Malvasía
Bodegas Luis Cañas The winery is situated in Villabuena in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. It is a family-owned winery that dates back to 1928, though the family have been involved with wine growing and production for more than two centuries. The estate controls 120 hectares of vineyards with clay soils overlying limestone.
The winery is focused primarily on the production of high quality Crianza and Reserva wines. The launch of their young wines to the market in 1970, by Luis Cañas, set the winery on route to become one of the leading wineries of the Rioja Alavesa Region. This reputation has further developed under the stewardship of Juan Luis Cañas, who took the helm in 1989, who has concentrated on strengthening the Crianza wines and overseen the development of the new winery. The new winery was opened in 1994, and has subsequently been expanded by the addition of another winemaking area and new cask cellar, providing facilities for the storage of 4,300 casks.
The result are quality wines which have been recognised for prestigious national and international awards and mentions.
Wine Making This wine is produced in the Rioja Alavesa region, from grapes grown on vines that are more than 60 years old. 2009 was rated as a good vintage. The wine was fermented for 17 days at 19ºC. It was matured in new French oak casks for 3,5 months with lees.
Tasting Notes The wine has the aroma of citrus fruits and toasty notes. The palate is fresh and clean, with flavours of lime and honey, and with vanilla notes.
